Wool Quilts

I first started making wool quilts when I worked at the Milwaukee Coat Company. The wool coats were made in beautiful tweeds and herringbones and luscious deep pile solid. Scarves of assorted bright plaids were attached to all sorts of coats. At the end of the season I looked at the wayward scarf box (they were constantly being separated from the coats and often impossible to rematch) and saw a wonderful mix of colors.

"Orbits"

"Orbits" is an exploration of circles, of solid and transparent, of texture and contrast, of earth and sky.

"Orbits" started with a boucle (nubby wool) that was masked and painted with metallic paint. A hand-dyed arc and hand-painted stone were added. Metallic circles were embroidered. The piece is machine quilted with heavy metallic thread circles and hand quilted with yarn.

"Ripples"

"Ripples" continued my exploration with wool. An odd shaped wool challis reminded me of a leaf. The edges were singed and the piece was laid on a painted wool mini-check background. Large quilting stitches with heavy thread applique the raw edge "leaf" to the background. Sheers and metallic provide the other elements of the work.
