Even though I had sewn many of my own clothes for years before being introduced to quilting, I have just recently started designing quilted garments. For some reason moving into a three dimensional design scared me. So I avoided them. Finally, I just gritted my teeth and jumped in. I have not regretted the move one bit. I like the surprise that while the fronts and backs are related, they do not have to be identical. This makes the garments so much fun because I can explore two different, but related ideas in the same piece. If I am unhappy with the first idea, I can just move it to the back, the pocket, or the sleeve and try again. Nothing ever goes to waste. It can always be recycled somewhere else. Wool is also an easy care fabric which means it can be packed and worn with little concern for wrinkles. Since I travel frequently, this is a very important characteristic.

"Rhythm in Red" was created for the 1997 Fairfield Fashion Show which premiered at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX in October. The garment then toured nationally and internationally as part of that exhibit for the next year.
This garment presented many new challenges. The most obvious one was after the garment was designed I realized I had not made allowances for buttons, again! I seem to be drawn to simple unadorned closures. The solution was to add additional interfacing to sculpt the front lapel. Velcro tabs were them strategically placed. Voila! I retained the interesting lapel and secretly closed the garment.
